Trading ConditionsMargin

How is margin calculated?

Overview

Margin is the amount of funds required to open and maintain a trading position. At Spec Markets, margin is calculated using the following formula: Margin = Price × Lots × Contract Size ÷ Leverage

Example

To open 1 lot of XAUUSD (Gold) at a price of USD 2,000 with a leverage of 1:100: 2,000 × 1 × 100 ÷ 100 = USD 2,000 required margin

Floating margin

Margin requirements are not fixed — they fluctuate in line with market prices. As the price of an instrument moves, the margin required to maintain your open position will adjust accordingly. We recommend monitoring your account margin level regularly to avoid a margin call.

Tip:To check the contract size of any instrument, open MT5, go to Market Watch, right-click the instrument, and select Specification.

Trading ConditionsMargin Call & Stop Out

What is a margin call?

Overview

A margin call is a notification triggered when your account's margin level falls to a critical threshold, alerting you to take action to maintain your open positions.

Margin Call & Stop Out Levels

EventMargin LevelAction
Margin Call100%Email notification sent automatically
Stop Out50% or belowPositions closed automatically by the system.

What happens at each level

Margin Call (100%): When your margin level reaches 100%, an automated email notification will be sent to your registered email address. This serves as an early warning to either deposit additional funds or reduce your open positions. Stop Out (50%): If your margin level continues to fall to 50% or below, the system will automatically begin closing your open positions, starting with the most unprofitable, until your margin level recovers above 50%. If the margin level cannot be recovered, all remaining positions may be closed.

Warning:The margin call email notification is your early warning before a stop out is triggered. We strongly recommend taking immediate action upon receiving a margin call notification to protect your account.

Trading ConditionsSpreads

Why did spreads widen?

Overview

Spec Markets offers floating spreads on all instruments, meaning spreads fluctuate in real time based on market conditions. Spread widening is a normal part of trading and is not indicative of a platform issue.

What causes spreads to widen?

Low liquidity periods: Spreads are typically tightest during peak trading hours when market liquidity is highest. As markets approach their opening or closing times, the number of active participants decreases, causing liquidity to thin and spreads to widen. This is most commonly observed:

  • In the minutes before and after a market opens or closes
  • During the overlap between trading sessions
  • Late at night or early in the morning when major markets are inactive. Major news events and economic data releases: When high-impact economic data is released — such as Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP), central bank interest rate decisions, or inflation figures — prices can move sharply and unpredictably within a very short timeframe. During these periods, liquidity providers widen their quotes to manage exposure, which is directly reflected in the spreads available to traders. Example: During a normal trading session, the spread on EURUSD may be as low as 0.1–0.3 pips. In the seconds surrounding a major news release, the same spread may temporarily widen to several pips before normalising once market conditions stabilise.

Tip:To minimise the impact of spread widening, consider avoiding opening new positions immediately before major news events or during market open and close periods. See How do I use the economic calendar? for more details.

Trading ConditionsSwaps & Overnight Fees

How are swaps calculated?

Overview

A swap (also known as a rollover fee) is a charge or credit applied to positions held overnight. Swap rates and calculation methods vary by instrument and can be viewed directly in MT5 under each instrument's Specification.

Swap calculation methods

MT5 supports three swap calculation methods, which vary by instrument:

MethodDescription
In PointsA fixed number of points applied to the position
In CurrencyA fixed amount in the instrument's margin currency
In PercentageA percentage of the position's closing price. To find out which method applies to a specific instrument, open MT5, go to Market Watch, right-click the instrument, and select Specification. The Swap Long and Swap Short rates are listed there.

Triple swap days

In certain cases, a triple swap is charged to account for weekend rollovers when markets are closed:

InstrumentTriple Swap DayWhen it appears
Forex & Precious MetalsWednesdayReflected on Thursday
All other instrumentsFridayReflected on the following session.

Islamic accounts

Islamic accounts (Swap-Free) are exempt from all swap charges. See Who can apply for an Islamic account? for eligibility and application details.

Trading ServicesRisk Management

How do I reduce trading risk?

Overview

Risk management is an essential part of trading. Spec Markets provides several tools to help you manage your exposure and protect your account.

Set a Stop Loss and Take Profit

A Stop Loss (SL) automatically closes your position when the market moves against you by a specified amount, limiting potential losses. A Take Profit (TP) closes your position when your target profit level is reached. Both can be set when placing an order in MT5, or added to an existing open position:

  • Open MT5 and go to the Trade tab
  • Right-click on an open position and select Modify or Delete Order
  • Enter your desired Stop Loss and Take Profit levels and confirm.

Manage your leverage

Higher leverage amplifies both potential profits and potential losses. Consider using a lower leverage setting if you are new to trading or during periods of high market volatility. See How do I change leverage? for details.

Monitor your margin level

Keep track of your margin level to avoid a margin call or stop out. Spec Markets will notify you via email when your margin level reaches 100%. If your margin level falls to 50% or below, positions will be automatically closed by the system. See What is a margin call? for details.

Control your position size

Trading smaller position sizes reduces your overall exposure per trade. Use the margin calculation formula to estimate the required margin before entering a position. See How is margin calculated? for details.

Use a Demo Account to practise

Before trading with real funds, consider testing your strategy on a Demo Account. Demo Accounts replicate live market conditions without any financial risk. See How do I create an MT5 account? for details.

Trading ServicesExecution & Order Types

What execution model is used?

Overview

Spec Markets uses Market Execution on the MT5 platform. Under this model, orders are filled at the best available market price at the time of execution.

Order types supported

  • Market Order
  • Limit Order
  • Stop Order
  • Stop Limit Order.

Execution policy

All account types (ECN and Standard) use Market Execution. The difference between ECN and Standard accounts relates to spread pricing, not execution model. Price changes If the market price changes between the time an order is placed and the time it is processed, the order will be filled at the next best available executable price. No requotes Spec Markets operates on a Fill Policy of Immediate or Cancel (IoC). Under this policy, orders are either filled immediately at the best available price or cancelled — there are no requotes. Partial fills In rare cases where liquidity is insufficient or an order size spans multiple levels of market depth, different liquidity providers may accept or reject different portions of the order. This may result in a partial fill. While uncommon, this possibility cannot be excluded.

Tip:For more information on account types and pricing differences, see What is a Standard account?

Platform & ToolsVPS

What is a VPS?

Overview

A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is a virtual computing environment hosted in a remote data centre. For forex traders, a VPS allows your MT5 platform and automated strategies (EAs) to run 24/7 without requiring your local device to stay on.

Key benefits of using a VPS

  • 24/7 uptime — Your strategies keep running even when your computer is off
  • Lower latency — VPS servers are often located close to trading servers, reducing order execution delay
  • Greater stability — Eliminates interruptions caused by local network outages, power cuts, or system crashes
  • Ideal for EA users — Provides a consistent environment for automated trading programmes and copy trading tools.

Who should use a VPS?

  • Run MT5 Expert Advisors (EAs) for automated trading
  • Need to keep orders open or monitor positions for extended periods
  • Experience unstable local internet or device performance
  • Don't want to miss trading opportunities due to your device being offline.

A 30-day cooling-off period applies after each approved reimbursement. You may submit a new application once 30 days have passed from the date of your last approval.

How is my trading volume calculated?

The system uses your application submission date as the reference point and counts your Forex / Metal trading volume over the previous 30 calendar days. This is calculated in real time at the point of each application and is not tied to a fixed calendar month.

My last approval was on 06/15. When can I apply again?

On 07/15 or later. The cooling-off period is 30 days from the date of your last approved reimbursement.

Where is the reimbursement paid?

Yes. Withdrawals from your Wallet follow the standard withdrawal process on the platform.

Can I submit two VPS invoices in one application?

My invoice name does not match my registered name. What should I do?

Your invoice name must exactly match your Spec Markets registered name or your application will be rejected. Please contact your VPS provider to correct the billing name before resubmitting, or contact our support team.

Can I claim reimbursement for a VPS paid via PayPal or cryptocurrency?

Yes, provided the payment record clearly shows the amount, date, and service name. Final acceptance is subject to review by our support team.

My application was rejected. Can I resubmit?

Yes. Correct or complete your documents and resubmit. The 1-3 business day review period restarts from the new submission date.

What is Forex trading?

Overview

Forex (Foreign Exchange) trading is the buying and selling of currency pairs with the aim of profiting from changes in exchange rates. It is the largest and most liquid financial market in the world, operating 24 hours a day, five days a week.

How does it work?

In Forex trading, currencies are always quoted in pairs — for example, EURUSD represents the Euro against the US Dollar. When you buy a currency pair, you are buying the base currency and selling the quote currency. When you sell, you do the opposite. Example If EURUSD is trading at 1.1000, it means 1 Euro is worth 1.10 US Dollars. If you believe the Euro will strengthen against the Dollar, you would buy the pair. If the rate rises to 1.1100, you profit from the difference.

Trading Forex as CFDs

At Spec Markets, Forex is traded as Contracts for Difference (CFDs). CFD trading allows you to speculate on price movements without owning the underlying asset. This means you can potentially profit from both rising and falling markets by going long (buy) or short (sell).

Warning:CFD trading involves significant risk and may not be suitable for all investors. You can lose more than your initial deposit. Please ensure you fully understand the risks involved before trading.

Community & EducationEconomic Calendar

How do I use the economic calendar?

Overview

An economic calendar tracks scheduled financial events and data releases that can impact the markets — such as interest rate decisions, employment reports, and inflation figures. Monitoring these events helps traders anticipate potential market volatility and plan their trading activity accordingly.

Accessing the economic calendar

Log in to your Client Area and navigate to the Calendar icon at the top of the page to view upcoming economic events.

How to read the calendar

Economic events are typically categorised by:

  • Date & time — When the event is scheduled to be released
  • Currency — The currency most likely to be affected
  • Impact level — Usually indicated as low, medium, or high impact
  • Previous / Forecast / Actual — Comparing the previous result, market consensus forecast, and the actual released figure helps traders gauge whether the outcome was better or worse than expected.

How it affects the markets

High-impact events — such as central bank interest rate decisions or Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) — can cause significant price movements and spread widening in a short period of time. Being aware of upcoming events allows you to:

  • Avoid entering new positions immediately before a high-impact release
  • Set appropriate Stop Loss levels to manage unexpected volatility
  • Identify potential trading opportunities based on the outcome.

Tip:For more information on how news events affect spreads, see Why did spreads widen?

TroubleshootingDeposit Problems

Why is my deposit pending?

Overview

A deposit showing a "Waiting for Money" status means your deposit order has been created successfully, but the payment has not yet been completed or confirmed by our payment partner.

Common reasons for a pending deposit

  • Payment not yet submitted — You created a deposit order in your Client Area but have not yet completed the payment on your bank or payment platform
  • Payment submitted but not yet confirmed — Your payment has been sent but is still being processed by the payment provider.

What to check

  • Confirm that you have completed the payment on your bank or payment platform after creating the deposit order in your Client Area
  • Check the expected processing time for your chosen payment method — processing times vary by method. See What are the deposit and withdrawal limits? for reference
  • For cryptocurrency deposits, confirm that your transaction has been broadcast on-chain and a transaction hash (TXID) has been generated.

TroubleshootingWithdrawal Problems

Why is my withdrawal delayed?

Withdrawal processing times vary by payment method. If your withdrawal has not arrived within the expected timeframe, please check the following.

USDT (TRC-20 / ERC-20)Within 15 minutes
Local payment methodsSame working day (before 12:00 PM AEDT/AEST cut-off)
Bank wire transfer2–14 working days.

  • Negative account balance — One or more of your MT5 accounts has a negative balance. Please contact our support team
  • Withdrawal method mismatch — See Why was my withdrawal rejected? for details
  • Bank wire specific issues — See Why hasn't my bank wire transfer arrived? for details.

Contact support

TroubleshootingTrading Problems

Why was my order rejected?

Overview

If your order was rejected, the most common cause is insufficient margin in your trading account. Please check the following before placing your order again.

What to check

  • Available margin: Ensure your account has sufficient free margin to open the position. Your available margin is displayed in MT5 under the Trade tab.
  • Account leverage: A lower leverage setting requires a higher margin to open the same position size. If your available margin is insufficient, consider reducing your position size. See How is margin calculated? for details.
  • Leverage applicable to the instrument: Note that custom leverage only applies to Forex and Precious Metals. All other instruments use their own fixed or dynamic leverage regardless of your account leverage setting, which may require more margin than expected. See What is the maximum leverage available? for details.

Tip:If your order cannot be placed due to market closure or position size limits, MT5 will display a specific error message indicating the reason. Check the Journal tab in the Toolbox panel for details.
